What the Criminal Code says
Section 207(1)(a) makes it lawful for the government of a province, alone or with other provinces, to conduct and manage a lottery scheme in that province. Section 207(4)(c) keeps games played on or through a computer, video device or slot machine out of the schemes that charities, fairs and other licensees may run, which leaves online slots with the provincial governments (Criminal Code, s. 207).
Ontario and Alberta
Ontario set up a market of private operators through iGaming Ontario, with the AGCO as regulator; players must be 19 and physically in Ontario (iGaming Ontario). Alberta's regulated market opened on 13 July 2026: private operators register with AGLC and sign an agreement with the Alberta iGaming Corporation (Government of Alberta).
If you live in Ontario or Alberta, use the operators licensed in your province. The offers on this site are not for you.

Tax on winnings
The Canada Revenue Agency says a prize from a lottery scheme is generally not taxable (CRA Income Tax Folio S3-F9-C1). Gambling income becomes taxable only when it amounts to carrying on a business of gambling. If your situation is unusual, ask a tax professional.
